Copywriting Blog - Who needs words?

We all know that hiring is never an easy process. Significant time is spent on writing great copy for ads that usually end up attracting many unqualified candidates.

These smart companies featured below have found neat ways to pre-qualify their candidates through the use of puzzles and problems. The answers to the first two are posted, but the last three are unsolved. Hopefully some of our readers will solve the rest! If no one solves them in a few days, we will post the correct solutions. Also, let us know what you think about this as a technique for recruiting.

creditsights.com for the rot13

That last one is impressive, that they worked backwards from a 7 or 10 digit answer.

3:57 PM

that last one would be easy to figure out if it were readable

#3 looks invalid.

4:14 PM

#3 is www.navngo.com/feladvany

I'll be damned if you find a compiler that will take that code though.

The billboard is ruined by the site listed at the bottom. Without that, it was a little tricksy~

Visual Studio compiles and runs it fine. Probably because it can compile C++.

I didn't think C++ compilers were all that rare. Who knew.

#3 is invalid and *shouldn't* compile. There are several problems with this code. If Visual Studio compiles it... well then that's Microsoft being non-compliant with the standard again.

5:01 PM

The EA one was especially funny because they put it up across the street from Radical Entertainment, a competing games company.

5:22 PM

"Don't forget to include the source code"? You don't want to hire people who write *code* to rot13 something when you have /bin/tr... or emacs...

5:40 PM

#3 compiles with g++ on Linux, too ... granted, you've gotta #include a couple of header files and write a stub for main, but the "cool" code compiles. It does trigger a couple of minor warnings, but that's it.

I didn't realize that's how C++ dealt with a struct passed to printf, though--at least in the cases where the struct leads off with character data. Huh. It makes sense, though. You learn something new every day.

6:51 PM

"this" is a pointer, so it's passing a pointer to a struct. Be equivalent of doing something like this:
printf("%s", (char *) (&some_struct));

Not a good idea to be doing, but it's valid.

7:53 PM

#3 _is_ invalid, regardless of whether it compiles, the premise is that leet('n') is called, and the function is cool().

In other words, I don't want to work for them! :-p

9:24 PM

I take back what I said about it not compiling. It does compile, but it's still screwed up.

The Reddit comments outline most of them.

10:24 PM

leet is not called, it is *declared* as a variable of type cool, at which point the constructor runs. Constructors are perfectly capable of printing output, though they generally shouldn't except for debugging.

Unrelatedly, I wouldn't want to work at a company that thinks the "code" for rot13 decryption is worth attaching. They clearly don't know how to leverage existing tools.

cool is a structure definition. leet is an instance of the cool structure. cool() is the initializer function of cool. He is using a structure like a class, which is completely valid as far as I know. It's confusing syntax, but it's not invalid.

10:30 PM

And by initializer I meant constructor. Essentially exactly what anonymous said.

10:33 PM

struct cool {
char p1, p2, p[5];

cool(int c) : p2(c++) , p1(c) {
strcpy(p, "v_ga");
p[1] = p2;
p2 = p[3];
p[3] = c;
printf("http://www.%s.com/feladvany\n", this);
}
};

main( )
{
struct cool *l = (struct cool *)new cool('n');

}
