Volume 1, Issue 8

February 16, 2006

Hi!,

How is everyone this fine mid-March? How did it get to be mid-March? I was just yesterday, it seems, crafting my vision for 2007. Ah, how time flies when we're having fun.

This has been a year (so far) of so much discovery for me. And you know what? Discovery is great for the long run and good for the soul and all of that, but it's not always so fun in that moment. In fact, it can be downright painful. The adage, 'no pain no gain' holds true in those moments when you make a mistake, get hurt or feel rejected, but the hope is that we always are the better for it (I said the hope, not the reality!).

On the business front, I've learned that sometimes it's OK to move on from a relationship that just isn't working. I've also been reminded that saying 'no' is more than OK - it's a must for any business owner. I have to always remind myself of the title of one of my favorite books: Nice Girls Don't Get The Corner Office

Speaking of being all the better for something (or not), our technology and Internet guru, Chris, created a video intro for our website. We've gotten some interesting reviews on it...what do you think? Go straight to our homepage to check it out. (Honesty requested and welcomed!)

Yours In Success,
Allison Nazarian & The Get It In Writing Team

What is Ghostwriting?

We're hearing a lot and being asked a lot about GHOSTWRITING these days. A ghostwriter is, simply, a person or company who is hired to write for another entity, be it a business or an individual without actual name credit. In other words, a journalist or an author gets a byline...a ghostwriter does not. (In most cases, copywriting is a form of ghostwriting.)

Since there has been so much talk about ghostwriting, we wanted to discuss ghostwriting rates:

They vary. There are a ton of variables, from skill level of the writer to time and length and medium. Obviously, fees to write a blog entry will be lower than fees to write a full-length book.

Also, what about frequency? Ghostwriting an article or website might be a one-time thing. Writing a blog might be a one-time only event, but really shouldn't be, since blogs should be updated regularly - sometimes even daily. Meanwhile, writing a book could take months or even years.

No matter what the specifics, ghostwriters and their clients need to be clear on the scope and purpose of the project before getting started or even quoting the project.

Five marketing decisions guaranteed to get you on the WRONG track!

Here are the top five marketing mistakes we see over and over. Any hit home for you?

1. Believing your own hype.
Telling prospects your product is best is fine, but only if you understand what really motivates the buyer. Research customers directly to find out why your customers think a competitor's product might be superior to yours and why your product isn't performing as expected.

2. Upping the ad budget will fix everything.
If you think tossing your marketing budget into more advertising will make sales soar, think again - and save your money. Marketing goes far beyond advertising, and slow sales may be due to a variety of other problems. Don't put any more into your ad budget until you've thoroughly reviewed all your marketing options.

3. The lowest-priced product wins!
Thinking that your customers will buy your product based solely on price in a major boo-boo. More than anything buyers want to believe they are receiving good value for their money. If you think you're losing out to lower-priced competitors, you may ultimately lose out to higher-value competitors. Instead, focus your marketing copy on demonstrating how your product offers the greatest value.

4. Successful businesses are very serious. (Our personal favorite!)
Make doing business with you easy - and even fun. It's amazing how many companies make doing business with them difficult. Put yourself in your customers' shoes and ensure that every contact - whether by phone, email or in person - is easy. Spend some effort in putting together questions and advice for your team to ask or offer to customers. Make it simple to find things on your website or in your store. Be open and inviting...make it easy to do business with you.

5. Changing your marketing campaign frequently is the way to go.
'If it ain't broke, don't fix it,' definitely applies here. Too many companies believe that frequently launching new marketing or ad campaigns is the way to go. Big mistake! It's all about reach (getting to the right audience) and frequency (making sure your prospects are exposed to your message on a regular basis). Winning concepts should be given enough time to work... to sink in. Not allowing a winning concept work for you can be a huge mistake and a big waste of money. And just because you're tired of the same campaign doesn't mean your potential customers have even come close to getting their fill or even recognizing your brand.
